Maggie and the Mason Jars

Maggie and the Mason Jars are a seasoned group of versatile Athens musicians who have created a sound at the confluence of Western Swing, Jazz and traditional High Lonesome Bluegrass.

The Mason Jars are:

Maggie Hunter has been a singer in a bluegrass band, the Warblers  (1992-2002) and folk band the Solstice Sisters,(!998-present)   She and Solstice Sister bandmate, Susan Staley, recently formed a folkified cover band called the Humdingers (2020-present) with fiddle player Ivan Strunin.  Now she is thrilled to have the opportunity to channel her inner cowgirl and sing a bit of Western Swing backed by the talented fiddler Ivan Strunin and guitarist Tommy Jordan.  "Yes, Music is my therapy and I need a lot of it."  When not making music with friends, she has taught at Athens Montessori School for thirty plus years.

Tommy Jordan (guitar, banjo, mandolin, vocals), well-known in the Athens/Atlanta acoustic music circles, has been performing in Athens and the surrounding area consistently since arriving in Athens in late 1976.  He currently plays with the acoustic-electric duo, MrJordanMrTonks, along with William Tonks, and the well-established traditional acoustic band, String Theory.  He was an integral part of the early-1980s Athens music scene with his roles in Turtle Bay Band and Men in Trees and also as a solo artist. With Turtle Bay, he played at the famous church steeple party where REM made their debut.  Tommy’s collaboration with William Tonks (MrJordanMrTonks) represents a move away from traditional roots music to high intensity guitar playing and tight harmony vocals.

He has played at AthFest, North Georgia Folk Festival, the Melting Point/Foundry, the Georgia Theatre, Eddie’s Attic, Red Clay Theater, the 40 Watt Club and the Bluebird Café in Nashville.  Tommy is the president of the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society (AFMDS) and has been the director of the North Georgia Folk Festival since 2008.

Mike Harrison (stand up bass, banjo, guitar, vocals) is one of Athens finest Bluegrass and Swing Jazz players. A fixture on the Georgia music scene, he has been part of BTU, In Cahoots, Solstice Sisters and is in the house band at the Mountain Music Medicine Show .

Ivan Strunin (fiddle, vocals) is a relative newcomer to Georgia, having played in bands in Chicago, Charlotte and Hong Kong. He is comfortable in many genres including Bluegrass, Gypsy Jazz, Western Swing, Country and Blues. Ivan is currently a member of the Humdingers and Doug Deluxe and the Rodeo Cowboys.
